New Year’s Resolutions, Part 2

In a previous post, I mentioned that I no longer make New Year’s resolutions regarding the most important aspects of my life–my writing, my family, my personal growth. This in part accounts for the great success of the resolution I made for 2008.

You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them. ~Satchel Paige

The other thing that made my 2008 resolution successful, and a complete blast, was a trick that might only matter to (or work for) writers. I made my resolution one word–a verb. I gave some thought to why this resolution was so successful, and in addition to being more fun than my previous resolutions, it required specific, unqualified action.

Last year’s resolution? Accessorize.

I realized I often admired the necklaces, earrings and other accessories of people I met, so I decided to get into the game. And it was a blast. Once I started keeping my eye open for scarves, necklaces, handbags, I started seeing them everywhere. I’ve enjoyed feeling more put together when I succeed, and I don’t sweat it much when I have a day without even earrings.

My top contender for 2009 is also a one-word resolution. When I think of this verb, I smile. I won’t tell what it is, but will say this: Satchel Paige would approve.

Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.

Satchel Paige
