Writing in Season

On Tuesday, we had a preview of spring, with temperatures reaching a balmy 75 degrees in my little corner of Wisconsin. That’s a rare treat in March.

And though today’s high is only supposed to reach 40 degrees, there are enough markers of the coming change of season to make me feel like it is almost here. The days are longer; and thanks to the newly improved daylight savings time schedule, there’s time for a walk after supper before dark. The thin branches of trees and shrubs grow fat and red with the coming proofs of life–leaves and buds.

Spring is a good time for me, writing-wise. The return of light brings with it renewed energy. The creative force is evident in the plants and animals outside, and in the enthusiasm with which my fingers travel over my keyboard.

Each season seems to have its own tenor in terms of writing. Spring and fall are highly productive times for me. Winter, though it often feels slow, is also pretty productive. Summer is more difficult because the quiet of my house during the school year gives way to the noise and activity of kids at home all day.

For now, I’m riding the productive wave that seems to come with spring, enjoying it just as much as I appreciate it each morning when I notice the light coming over the horizon a few minutes earlier than the day before.
