Happy New Year, and Back to Work
The beginning of September feels more like new year to me than January 1 ever has, and I know I’m not alone, especially among my fellow writers. I think we all still look forward to the beginning of the school year as a time to start anew. One writer friend recently confided that she still goes back-to-school shopping–for herself. Me, too. There’s something irresistible about a new notebook, fresh pens, reams of printer paper.
So Happy New Year! And back to work!
Labor Day is over, school has started, and my writing routine is searching for a new normal.
Funny how every disruption of routine ultimately results in a changed routine. When I began this blog, I posted first thing every weekday morning, as soon as my kids got on the school bus.
This year, I want to use my mornings to work on the novel. It’s easier to tap into my right-brain creativity then, and I need it more than ever: I’m deep in the imagining and outlining process, starting to really intuit and get a feel for who these characters are, what drives them, how they challenge one another, what themes naturally emerge from these people and situations.
So this year, I’ll likely be posting to the blog in the afternoon. And I’m excited about what’s coming up, especially some news about a new project from regular contributor Sarah Busse. She’s got me thinking about poetry, so I’ll be writing about that, too. And about the new books coming out this fall, what I’m reading, and, as always, sharing thoughts and tips on the writing life.
Stop back soon, and of course, share your thoughts in comments.
